The Banana Hoard (or "Horde") is Donkey Kong's treasure that is persistently stolen throughout most of the Donkey Kong games. In Donkey Kong Country, King K. Rool stole the horde right from the beginning, creating the game's plot. In Donkey Kong 64, the Banana Horde was stolen, along with the Kong family kidnapped.

Donkey Kong Country 2 made the horde a bargaining chip for DK's safe return from K. Rool. Donkey Kong Country 3, however, never has any involvement with the horde.

In DK64, the stars in Super Mario 64 and banana collection are directly similar; the same can be said for Banjo-Kazooie's jiggy element in comparison. This form of advancing in levels by grabbing some kind of object is a staple of most platformers to unlock new levels. The horde evolved from a simple plot element to an actual gameplay element because of the N64 game. It should also be noted that the horde's bananas were golden, instead of being regular bananas.
