Battletoads is a beat 'em up developed by Rare for the NES and Genesis. The original Battletoads on the NES is hailed as being one of the hardest games on the system, due to its massive difficulty level. The revamped Genesis version, featuring better graphics and sound, is much easier than the NES version.

Plot

(Summarized from the NES manual)

After being defeated at the battle of Canis Major by the Galactic Corporation, the Dark Queen retreats her forces to the outer-most recahes of the universe. On the spacship Vulture, headed by Professer T. Bird and the Battletoads, the crew are escorting Princess Angelica back to her home planet. Pimple decides to take Angelica out for a ride in the Toadster to a Leisure Station. The Dark Queen manages to ambush the two and take them hostage at Ragnarok's World. Pimple sends out a distress signal, making the other two toads -Rash and Zitz- ready for action against the Dark Queen.

Differences Between Versions

Other than updated graphics and sound on the Genesis edition of the game from the NES version, a major bug was fixed in the process. In the last few levels of the NES, in two player mode, a glitch causes second player to become still and unable to move throughout the entire level; rendering him useless. Thus, the game cannot be fully completed via two player mode in the NES version.

One other major change was the speed of the third level. Previously, the NES was much faster in sending the ramp and walls at the 'Toads, but the Genesis version slows it down so the player has better time to react.
