Biography
Cheato is an anthropomorphic book of spells who is capable of levitation. Though he was originally owned by Gruntilda, he helps Banjo and Kazooie by giving them cheats. His outside cover is red with a yellow border, and reads "SPELLS" in yellow lettering on the front, with the back apparently depicting a yellow C-Up button.
In the Games
Banjo-Kazooie
In Banjo-Kazooie, he appeared in three different locations in Gruntilda's Lair, and supplied a different cheat from each one. His cheats doubled the maximum capacity for eggs, Red Feathers and Gold Feathers.
Banjo-Tooie
In between Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, Gruntilda ripped out Cheato's pages in anger. This was originally considered to be a plothole, as Gruntilda was trapped under a boulder between these games, but Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge resolved the paradox by showing that Grunty did emerge from the rock for a short time, more than likely long enough to exact her revenge on Cheato at some point (though this is unseen).
The gameplay required to get cheats was somewhat different in Banjo-Tooie. Cheato remained in one place throughout the game (the lobby of Grunty's Lair), so instead of getting cheats merely for finding him, Banjo and Kazooie had to return his torn-out pages - five Cheato Pages got one cheat.
There were three Cheato Pages per level as well as one in Spiral Mountain, making twenty-five pages in total and, therefore, five official cheats. These were:
- EGGS - doubled the maximum capacity of all types of egg
- FEATHERS - doubled the maximum capacity of both types of feather
- FALLPROOF - made Banjo immune to harm from long falls
- HONEYBACK - made lost energy gradually return over time
- JUKEBOX - activated the jukebox in Jolly's
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Cheato does not appear in person, but in Banjoland there is a ramp modeled after him.
