Conkers Bad Fur Day is a 3D platforming game for the Nintendo 64 by Rare. It is Rare's first "M" rated game for any console. Conker is now a cult classic amougst N64 fans, even though it sold poorly because it was published near the end of the N64's life. The game has since been remade as Conker: Live and Reloaded on the Xbox.

Development

Conker's Bad Fur Day was originally titled Conker's Quest, which was later retitled Twelve Tales: Conker 64. Early screenshots suggested the game would feature cute characters and colorful settings. Rare had a long history of making games of this sort, such as Banjo-Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing. However, Rare started to fear that the game would simply get lost in the platforming crowd, and critical mockery of "yet another cute platformer" caused the original game to be drastically overhauled.

Once Rare annouced that the newly redone Conker would be more adult-oriented than anything else they've done, many did not believe it. Chris Seavor, inspired by the likes of South Park, redid much of the game's art and overall attidude in a adult manner. Seaver voiced Conker, along with all the male characters in the game (except the Great Mighty Poo, who was voiced by Chris Marlow). Louise Ridgeway voiced all the female characters in the game.

The game was different from the Banjo series and Donkey Kong 64, Rare's previous N64 games, in relying far less on collecting a variety of items. When items were needed to further the game's story, they were not scattered about; instead, they were nearby. This is a large contrast to Rare's usual antics of hiding out things like money and new moves in various locations. Moves were also simplified by having 'context sensitive' buttons, having them easily understandable to any user.

Controversy

Being that the game is rated M, on a Nintendo console, and made by a part of Nintendo made it a subject of controversial matter. Nintendo, known for its family-friendly games like Mario and Zelda, has never produced an M rated game in-house. CBFD's box is a notable sign at Nintendo's worries on the game: the "M" is larger than any other game box has, and a warning detailing that anyone below 17 is not meant to play it. The ESRB system was still relatively new, and Nintendo was worried that parents may pick the game up because it had furry animals on the box.

Advertisements for BFD were featured in magazines such as Playboy and television commericals only aired late at night. Because of this, the game sold in low quanities as the advertising barely got word out of the game. And with that, Nintendo was losing faith in Rare and sold most of their shares up until the Microsoft buyout of Rare.
