Donkey Kong Land is a Donkey Kong game developed by Rare for Nintendo GameBoy console in 1995. It is based on the similarly titled SNES game, Donkey Kong Country.

Story

The stoy begins when Cranky Kong claims that the success of Donkey Kong Country was due purely to its fancy pre-rendered graphics, rather than its gameplay. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong become fed up and claim that people liked DKC for more than its graphics, and that it's "just plain fun." Cranky then calls them out on this, challenging them to do the same adventure on a graphically limited system like the Game Boy and see then if it succeeds just the same. After Donkey and Diddy agree, Cranky Kong calls up King K. Rool and tells him to have his Kremling Krew steal the banana horde once again, only hiding the bananas in new places around the island.

Gameplay

Gameplay is much the same as DKC, with a few changes, for example, you only have one character out at a time (Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong). When you break open a DK Barrel, the other character is left in reserve. If you get hit, you switch characters. If you get hit without having a character in reserve, you die. Characters can be switched in and out with the Select button.

The number of remaining lives is measured by small hearts in the corner of the screen.

Worlds

There are four main worlds in Donkey Kong Land, with many levels in each.

Sequels

The game had two sequels, ala the Country series, Donkey Kong Land 2 and Donkey Kong Land III.

In 2001, a port of Donky Kong Country for the GameBoy Color was released, but was less well-recieved than Land.
