Biography

Mumbo is a shaman in the Banjo-Kazooie game series. He lives in any one of his skull-shaped huts situated around the many lands visited by the bear and bird. In Banjo-Kazooie, he will - given the right number of Mumbo Tokens - offer his assistance to Banjo and Kazooie by transforming them into various animals and objects which can help them to progress further. He returned as a playable character in Banjo-Tooie for the Nintendo 64, and could (provided there was a Mumbo Pad and a Glowbo at hand) use his staff to perform magical incantations that could do such things as lift inanimate objects, oxygenate water in such a way that it becomes breathable, and alter the size of objects. A younger Mumbo Jumbo offered his transformation services once again in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge - and he is playable in Banjo Pilot.

Mumbo Jumbo's appearence is quite distinctive, because of the fact that his face was turned into a skull mask by Gruntilda the witch. Presumably after he was finished his witch doctor training during the 1970s - as was revealed in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, Mumbo himself became a shaman instructor. Gruntilda was one of his pupils - and reportedly one of his finest. Unfortunately, after she had completed her training, she used her new-found powers to unleash a face-disfiguring curse upon Mumbo, and to begin her life as a thoroughly unpleasant witch.

He has been known to occasionally mess up his transformation spells, with the hilarious consequence of turning Banjo into a washing machine (a transformation which was later used in Banjo-Tooie).

In the Games

Banjo-Kazooie

Mumbo Jumbo appeared in several of the levels throughout Banjo-Kazooie, offering to transform the bear and bird into these different creatures and objects:

  • Mumbo's Mountain - Termite: As a termite, you are able to climb up steep hills without slipping, therefore making it possible to scale the termite mountain.
  • Bubblegloop Swamp - Crocodile: The crocodile can traverse the pirahna-infested waters of Bubblegloop Swamp with ease and comfort. Thanks to its small size, Banjo can now enter places he couldn't before, such as Mr. Vile's home. He can leap about, and snap at enemies with his razor-sharp teeth - thus making him the only transformation that can attack.
  • Freezeezy Peak - Walrus: Walrus Banjo's thick layer of blubber ensures that the freezing-cold waters of Freezeezy Peak leave him unharmed. The player can befriend Wozza the walrus, and gain access to Wozza's Cave as a result. Inside, there is a Jiggy, a Jinjo a blocked-off passageway through which you can see the fabled Ice Key. There is also some freezing water that the walrus can go through, leading to an Empty Honeycomb Piece.
  • Mad Monster Mansion - Pumpkin: The pumpkin can fit through small cracks and holes that Banjo's regular shape cannot. As a result, you can - as a pumpkin - explore the septic tank beneath Loggo the toilet, and various other previously-inaccessible locations. The crypt outside Mad Monster Mansion, which can only be entered as a pumpkin after the crypt gate has been smashed with the Rat-a-tat Rap, also houses Mumbo and serves as a place to transform between the pumpkin, and Banjo and Kazooie.
  • Click Clock Wood - Bee: As a bee, can fly from wherever he likes, making climbing the gigantic central tree of the Click Clock Wood an easy feat. The bee can also enter, and be welcomed into the Zubba' nest - in which Banjo can get another Jiggy. Mumbo can only transform you in the spring - as he is either too hot, too busy, or simply gone on holidays during the other seasons.

Banjo-Tooie

In Banjo-Tooie Mumbo had a different role to play. He no longer transformed you into animals as this was now the job of Mumbo's rival Humba Wumba. Mumbo, for the first time, became a playable character. As Banjo and Kazooie you had to find a Glowbo and then give it to Mumbo, he then let you take control of him and use the power of the Glowbo and his shaman abilities to do magical things, such as the following:

  • Witchyworld : Power Star Spinner - Powers up the ride Star Spinner in which Banjo and kazooie must jump on the stars to reach the spinning planet that holds a Jiggy.
  • Jolly Roger's Lagoon : Sunlight: Oxygenate Water - Shines the sun on the lagoon, oxygenating it letting Banjo and Kazooie swim underwater without loosing oxygen.
  • Terrydactyland : Enlage Stepping Stones - Enlarges stepping stones outside Mumbo's hut making it easier to cross the swamp.
  • Terrydactyland : Enlarge Small Styracosaurus - Enlarges the Small Styracosaurus.

At the end of the game, Mumbo is in the group kicking Grunty's head around.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, he returns with a new role. Since the demand for shaman magic has declined in the eight years since Banjo-Tooie, Mumbo opens Mumbo's Motors, a garage in Showdown Town. In the game, this is where Banjo and Kazooie can bring the vehicle parts they collect to build new vehicles. Mumbo has also created the magic wrench, given to Kazooie by LOG which she can use in various ways.

Banjo-Pilot

Mumbo appears as a playable racer in Banjo-Pilot. His stats are as follows:

  • Top Speed: 3/5
  • Acceleration: 2/5
  • Handling: 3/5

Trivia

  • Mumbo Jumbo's voice was provided by Banjo-Kazooie musician Grant Kirkhope prior to his departure from Rare in 2008.
