Star Fox Adventures is a video game for Nintendo's GameCube video game system. It was the only Rare game to be released for the Nintendo GameCube. It was originally going to be released as Dinosaur Planet for the Nintendo 64. It follows Fox McCloud, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare on a mission from General Pepper to go to Dinosaur Planet and attempt to reattach pieces of the planet that had broken off.

Story

The story is as follows: General Scales, a nasty fellow who doesn't really care what happens to the planet he is trying to take over, starts to spread his dominion over Dinosaur Planet, a once peaceful planet that is now in trouble. The Star-Fox team gets a distress call from that planet and decides to help. It seems that hunks of Dinosaur Planet have broken off of the planet. Soon after, they find out that they weren't the only people to answer the call! Krystal, a female fox, went too and got imprisoned in an old temple. The Star-Fox team decided to help. On the planet, Fox meets Tricky, an extremely annoying prince who gets Fox into a heap of danger! Tricky decides to help Fox save the land from Scales.

WARNING! Plot spoiling details ahead!

Later, Fox finds out that Andross was behind all of it! Falco Lombardi, an ex member of the Star-Fox team, comes in and helps Fox defeat Andross once and for all!

Gameplay

The gameplay style of Star Fox Adventures is not at all what you would expect from a Star Fox game. While there are some of the traditional shoot-em-up levels you would expect from a Star Fox game, most of the game takes place in on foot levels. As Fox, you walk around in a free-roaming environment, your (annoying) sidekick Prince Tricky of the Earthwalkers by your side. You solve puzzles and collect a vast amount of items, some minor, some major. You destroy attacking enemies using a staff. This all amounts to a very Zelda-like game.

Your goal is to obtain four spell stones so that Dinosaur Planet, which has had four sections of it drift into space, may become whole again. You usually do this by entering temples in which the spell stone may be obtained, after you solve several puzzles and defeat the boss which holds the stone. Without the spell stones, the rest of the planet will be ripped apart.

The spell stones aren't the only things you're after. You're also out to save Krystal, a female fox who was imprisoned after getting and then releasing a Krazoa spirit. It's your job as Fox to finish what Krystal started and find the remaining six Krazoa spirits. You can't just collect these spirits as you would the spell stones, however. You have to find the secret portals leading to the Krazoa's places of residence. Once you do this, you must go through a mini-level and then complete a test of some type, a test conducted by the spirit itself. If you fail then you will be sent back to the beginning of the mini-level. If you succeed, the spirit will then possess Fox, and you must take him to the Krazoa temple to release the spirit. Find all the Krazoa spirits and you just may be able to rescue Krystal!

While a fair amount of your adventure takes place on Dinosaur Planet, you must also visit the sections of it which are floating in space, as not all spell stones and Krazoa spirits can be found on the planet. When it comes time to set foot on one of these areas, you must find the gatekeeper on Dinosaur Planet who will open the gate to that section. Then, hop in your Arwing. You can only land on a floating section of Dinosaur Planet if you complete an Arwing level by flying through a certain amount of gold rings (you must do the same for getting back to Dinosaur Planet from space).

The enemies which will attack you are often members of General Scales' sharpclaw tribe. They are defeated easily with several whacks from your staff. Bosses usually require tougher punishment, however.

Your staff isn't just for whacking things, either. It has a few abilities, such as the blaster or the rocket boost, which you will obtain throughout the game.

As previously stated, this all amounts to a very Zelda-like game (not including the Arwing levels of course). This has been accepted and praised by some, but put down and hated by others, especially hardcore fans which believe that Fox should never leave his Arwing. Many believe this is not a true Star Fox game. That's because Star Fox Adventures, in it's beginnings as Dinosaur Planet, was not originally intended by Rare to be a Star Fox game in the first place. The final boss battle shows that very clearly.

Characters

Fox McCloud: Leader of the Star Fox Team. Fox is the only one left on the team who still flies his Arwing. He doesn't feel comfortable being on Dinosaur Planet without a blaster, but the staff makes up for that. On a side note, for some reason Fox seems to be portrayed as a guy who cares more about money than anything else. Whether this was intended by Rare or not is unknown.

Slippy Toad: Slippy has traded his pilot's wings for a spot in research development. He acts as a translator for you temporarily (the dinosaurs don't speak English), and then makes an electronic translator for you. He also provides hints (though that seems like something that Peppy should be doing) in-game. He also has a noticeable accent in this game.

Peppy Hare: Peppy is the only member of the team who was part of the original Star Fox team (headed by James McCloud, now dead, and also consisting of Pigma, who betrayed the team when Andross offered him more cash to fatten his wallet with). In his old age, he no longer pilots Arwings, but still gives support to the team and provides Fox with maps of temples.

Tricky: Prince of the Earthwalkers, one of the two ruling tribes of Dinosaur Planet. Tricky is annoying, but helpful, and Fox actually grows attached to him, despite how reluctant he was to allow him to join him in the first place. Tricky has some abilities with which he can help Fox as well.

General Scales: The leader of the Sharp Claw tribe who wants to rule Dinosaur Planet.

Krystal: A female fox who was imprisoned after rescuing the first Krazoa spirit. It's Fox's job to rescue her.

Worlds/Levels

Main worlds

Dinosaur Planet Dinosaur Planet is the first world which you visit, and you will return to it many times. Dinosaur Planet contains most of the areas Fox will visit.

Gold rings required for landing: 1

DarkIce Mine This area is the first ripped-off section of the planet that you must visit. The Snowhorn tribe is here and has been enslaved. On the surface, it appears to be a snowy forced labor camp. Underground, however, is made up of a series of lava-filled caves.

In game, Fox comes here for the 1st spell stone. While searching, Tricky goes missing. Fox saves Tricky and gets the spell stone (freeing the enslaved members of the Snowhorn tribe in the process)

Gold rings required: 3

CloudRunner Fortress The Cloudrunner Fortress is the home of the Cloudrunners, second ruling tribe of Dinosaur Planet. You must free the fortress from Sharpclaw control, and Tricky won't be there to help you, as the Cloudrunners and Earthwalkers are rivals.

Gold rings required: 5

Walled City This is where the Earthwalker tribe, including the King Earthwalker himself, reside. The city has been overtaken by Redeyes, ferocious, T-Rex-like dinosaurs which live by only one motto: "If it moves, eat it." The Earthwalkers need your help to overcome the Redeyes.

Gold rings required: 7

Dragon Rock This is where the last spell stone resides, and retrieving it will be your toughest task yet.

Gold rings required: 10
