Viva Piñata is one of Rare's newest games for the Xbox 360. The objective of the game is to build and customize a randomly-generated garden in any way you want, usually by growing crops, which can be performed with the most simple of tools (such as a shovel and a watering pail). Depending on how you treat your garden, different kinds of Piñatas will come and visit. For example, Buzzlegums will visit gardens that are a good source of flowers and apples. Piñatas that might decide to stay in your garden, but you'll need a special home for them first.

Your garden is located on Piñata Island, where you'll also find a nearby island village. There, you can buy, sell, or trade goods or Piñatas.

At least sixty Piñatas have been confirmed to be in the game. The game also supports content downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace. At this time, only Jet Force Gemini headgear is available, but players may be able to download Piñatas some time in the future. Players with Xbox Live accounts can also send items, money, and Piñatas to each other through the game's Post Office, and according to Pinataisland.info, there will eventaully be a patch that will allow players to visit each others' gardens.

Piñatas love to dance and can fall in love with each other, which usually happens after you get the two Piñatas to meet each other and become friends. This is easily done since only two Piñatas of the same species can move into your garden. Once they have fallen in love, you will get to see their romance dance and get to play mini-games. If you successfully complete the romance mini-game, Storkos will visit you with an egg that seems to have appeared out of nowhere.
